Welcome to the Worlds Skills NZ Mental Toughness training programme.
PEAK PERFORMANCE UNDER STRESS
We analysed your definitions of mental toughness and matched them with an existing model that best fit you as a team. We were then able to expand upon this to create our own model and definition that best fit the World Skills NZ team as a whole.
Peak Performance Under Stress – this is our definition of what someone with a strong, healthy mental toughness will achieve. Pretty simple. Our goal is to help build your motivation for getting you to Sao Paulo and then help you perform at your peak throughout the competition. The benefit to you is that this is not just all about the competition – mental toughness helps in all areas of life.
We know when someone is ‘mentally tough’ when they exhibit certain behaviours. There are five key behaviours in our model of positive mental toughness and these are what we are going to be working with you to develop:
PURPOSEFULNESS
This behaviour is characterised by the clarity of your goals and tasks, the plan-based regulation of your activity and behaviours, and your targeted concentration towards achieving the goal
SELF-CONTROL & COMPOSURE
This behaviour is characterised by the maintenance of a clear mind and the ability to regulate one’s own thoughts, feelings and actions under conditions of emotional excitation or depression, intensive stress, fatigue, the appearance of unexpected obstacles, failure, and the influence of other unfavourable factors
CREATIVITY & FLEXIBILITY
This behaviour is characterised by personal eagerness, innovation, and creativity during the process of a goal-directed behaviour and a resistance to the influence of other people and their actions
EFFECTIVE DECISION MAKING
This behaviour is characterised by the timeliness and thoughtfulness of decision making and effectiveness of behaviour, especially under risky and dangerous conditions
PERSEVERANCE
This behaviour is characterised by the prolonged conservation of energy and level of activity necessary for achieving a goal and overcoming many, especially unexpected, obstacles of varying degrees of difficulty
Behind these behaviours are a set of training objectives we will be using throughout our missions. We will be exploring these in more detail throughout the year ahead. Our overall structure for the months ahead are as follows:
